This blog post is my review of the slow carb diet. Before I review any diet, I run myself through them. I do this for a few reasons: 1) I will be able to honestly speak about what I think of the diet because I have been through it. 2) I am my own best science experiment.
The Slow Carb diet is a diet that Tim Ferris discusses in his book “The Four Hour Body”. For a full review of the entire book, click here (LINK COMING SOON). There is a section that discusses “How To Lost 30lbs in 30 Days”. The premise behind this chapter is to shed fat like nothing else, follow the slow carb diet. The slow carb diet a diet that follows these rules:
Rule #2 – Eat the same few meals over and over.
Rule #3: Don’t Drink Calories.
Rule #4: Don’t Eat Fruit. Avocado in limited quantities (one per meal per day).
Rule #5: Take one day off a week. This cheat day you can eat anything and as much as you want.
Sounds simple right? In all honesty, this diet actually did produce some results. I ended up dropping about 8 lbs in 30 days using this diet regime. And although I did yield some great results, I won’t be recommending this diet to anyone anytime soon. And here is why:
You can’t honestly think, that for the rest of your life, you are going to save a single day to eat crap. “Sorry guys, I can’t hit up Happy Hour today. It’s tuesday and my cheat day is friday”. “Hi Honey. Can we celebrate our anniversary on Saturday night instead of Friday night. It is my cheat day.” I am so excited for the tailgate this sunday before the football game! I am bringing a side of steam veggies for myself because it isn’t my cheat day.”
Look – I understand the need to eat healthy. But I also understand the need for a balanced life. This diet plan may yield results, but does it allow you to have a balanced life? I don’t think so. I think the cheat day, although great in theory as a reward system, forces you become obsessive about your diet and ensure that only the cheating happens here.
Cheating happens. Life happens. You need to pick and choose your cheating meals/battles, not save them for one day.
Take away point: Nothing because a healthy, balance diet. No cheat day, no slow carbs, nothing. I will not be recommending this diet to anyone in the near future.
